Rowan TwoSisters is a licensed midwife, massage therapist, and curandera serving families in Houston, Texas. She brings over three decades of hands-on healing experience to Preggers Can Be Choosers LLC, her midwifery and massage therapy practice in Houston.

How to Work With Rowan

Rowan serves on delivery teams at Knox Birth Center and as part of the primary prenatal care team at Full Circle Family. Families who want Rowan as part of their birth team can connect with her through those practices.

Through Preggers Can Be Choosers LLC, Rowan offers prenatal consultations, second opinions, and additional pregnancy support from her inner loop Houston office—or virtually for clients outside the Houston area. In-person services include pelvic floor care and massage therapy.

Credentials & Training

Rowan holds credentials as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), Licensed Midwife (LM), and Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT). She has worked as a massage therapist since 1993, a massage therapy instructor since the early 2000s, and a continuing education provider for massage therapists since the 2010s. She became a licensed midwife in 2019 and a midwifery preceptor in 2021, training the next generation of Texas midwives.

Rowan is the author of Cervical Scars, A Bigger Deal Than You Think and Labor Whispering, Intro for the 11th Hour Pound of Cure, bringing her clinical expertise to readers navigating fertility, birth, and labor preparation.

Through the Labor Whispering Academy™ at the Institute of Massage & Health Education, Rowan trains massage therapists in prenatal, postpartum, fertility, and loss massage—working toward her goal of every birth center in Texas staffed with skilled reproductive bodyworkers. She’s equally passionate about menopausal care, helping people reclaim their bodies through one of life’s most under-supported transitions.

Curandera Lineage

Rowan’s path as a healer began at eighteen, when a curandera elder recognized her gifts and set her on the path of traditional healing. She has spent the 36 years since studying with indigenous and traditional healing arts practitioners across multiple traditions.

In 2004, renowned curandera and author Elena Avila picked Rowan out of a room of fifty people and blessed her as “curandera total”—a complete healer—and named her “the sunflower from El Paso,” honoring her border roots and her capacity to turn toward the light while staying grounded in the earth.

Rowan is transparent about her identity as an Anglo curandera. She was taught by elders who chose to share their knowledge with her, and she carries that responsibility with humility and ongoing commitment to learning.

Birth Work in Crisis

Rowan’s midwifery career was forged in fire. During the COVID-19 pandemic and the community uprising following George Floyd’s murder in 2020, she worked at a Medicaid birth center in Houston where monthly births jumped from 2 to 37. When hospitals restricted access and families needed alternatives, she was there—holding space for new life during collective trauma, serving families who deserved excellent care regardless of their insurance status.

That experience shaped everything about how she practices today: steady in crisis, adaptive under pressure, and deeply committed to serving people who are often underserved by the mainstream medical system.

Philosophy of Care

Rowan believes that people know their own bodies and their own lives. Her job is to provide information, support, and skilled hands—not to make decisions for the people she serves. She practices with a harm reduction approach, meeting clients where they are rather than where she thinks they should be.

Her practice is trauma-informed, queer and LGBTQ+ affirming, size-inclusive, and full spectrum. As a queer provider herself, Rowan understands the importance of affirming care.

She draws on both traditional healing wisdom and evidence-based clinical practice, seeing no contradiction between the two. The curandera’s role is to open roads for others, not to walk the path for them.

El Paso Roots, Houston Practice

Born and raised in El Paso, Rowan carries the desert and the border in her bones. She lives in Houston with her wife and family, bringing urban curandera energy to the fourth largest city in the country from her inner loop office.

Rowan provides clinical services attended by a working service dog.

She is also a fiction author writing about a curandera-midwife in West Texas. Learn more at HellaGoode.com.
